Micro Dioramas: Phoenix Lords
Accompanying Notes
Part of my micro diorama series, these Phoenix Lords in 6mm scale represent my favourite GW minis of all time. Everything is hand sculpted except for the Eldar buildings, which predate 3D printing all the same. Photographing glass domes is tricky and I’m not happy with the current results. I’ll redo the photos at some point.
#2 – Irillyth
Totally impossible to photograph the mist effect properly and the camera makes it looks much more ‘woolly’ than it is IRL, especially against a black background. It’s teased out cashmere, which is the thinnest natural thread around.
#3 – Karandras
Placing all the brass leaves took ages, but I’m really happy with this one, especially since Karandras is obviously the best Phoenix Lord..
#4 – Asurmen
I messed up here being thrifty and using old super glue which frosted the base. Super annoying and since all the domes are glued with Araldite, I would need to get the rotaray tool and cut him out if I wanted to fix it. Which I do.
#5 – Maugen Ra
The great thing about these domes is one can make extremely fine details without fear of them being handled and broken. Like this tree.
#6 – Bahorroth
Another impossible dome to photograph. Both figures appear to be floating in the air and it works well in the flesh. The clouds are a mixture of cotton wool and cashmere for varied texture.
#7 – Fuegan
This one cemented my appreciation of pigments. The matte effect is perfect to for representing charcoal.
#8 – Jain Zar
I tried to mix static grass, grass tufts and pigments to represent a sandy, grassy terrain you might find near a beach on the South coast of England.
#? – Lhykhis
All these minis were hand sculpted before Lhykhis, so the newest Phoenix Lord doesn’t exist. If anyone wants to donate a 6mm Lhykhis (hand sculpted / 3d printed / whatever), I’d love to add him to the series!
